Hi,
- I used to have Visual Studio.Net 2008 on my laptop but had to remove it. Will the radControls install in Visual Web Developer Express?
- I just installed RadControls for ASP.NET AJAX in the free version Visual Web Developer Express on my laptop. I don't see the radControls in the toolbox. How do I get them to display?
- I wanted to download RadControls for ASP.NET, but I did not see that download. Is it still available and is that the one I should use instead of AJAX radControls?
Thanks!

I believe the Ajax controls work in Web Developer Express since they are on the system requirements page. As for your toolbox issues I haven't personally used WDE but I believe the approach is similar (if not the same) to this one.

Thanks, Schlurk! I appreciate your providing the links for further learning.
When I opened the bin35 file, I noticed that there was a folder there named Telerik.Web.Design.dll and Telerik.Web.UI.XML. I clicked on the Web.Design.dll file but I received an error. I didn't click on the Web.UI.XML file.
Thanks!

- Do I need these files as well?
- What are they used for?
Thanks!

Also, I wanted to download RadControls for ASP.NET, but I did not see that download.
- Is it still available?
- If so, should I use that set of tools instead of AJAX radControls?
- What's the difference between the two?
Links to this information is much appreciated.
Thanks

Hello Robynne,
I sugest you refer to the 'Installation and Deployment' from the online documentation of RadControls for ASP.NET AJAX for the information you are looking for:

Telerik.Web.UI.dll (not necessarily Telerik.Web.UI.xml) and Telerik.Web.Design.dll are two assemblies which you need for your project. You definitely need Telerik.Web.UI.dll since that's the main assembly which contains everything. The design.dll should be a separate file which you should include for design-time support. There is a blog post which you can find here which discusses this further.
As for the ASP.NET controls versus ASP.NET Ajax controls, it depends on what framework you are designing your application within. If it's .NET 2.0 with no Ajax extensions then you need the old ASP.NET controls. If you have .NET 2.0 with Ajax Extensions 1.0 or .NET 3.x then you should use the Ajax controls. I believe there isn't much support for the old ASP.NET controls since it is a much older environment (.NET 4.0 is coming up quickly), and all of the new updates, fixes, and new controls come out in the Ajax controls. I'm not sure as to its availability, you might have to make a special request for a download link or something.
